FANSA is a consortium member of Freshwater Action Network, a global consortium of CSO networks implementing and influencing water and sanitation policy and practice.
FANSA aims to strengthen the engagement of CSOs in policymaking and development specifically in the South Asia region. It has national level networks in India, Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh. In particular, it supports initiatives to achieve the international targets on water and sanitation, improve regional cooperation between different CSOs and increase the number of NGOs to advocate and communicate clearly on water policy issues and the broader agenda.
To conduct the consultation process among NGOs in India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Pakistan to review the ongoing networking and advocacy process of CSOs (FAN members and others) engaged in advancing water & sanitation development and implementation of IWRM approaches. Basing on the outcome of this consultation process long term strategies and action plan for strengthening of networking process in South Asia was developed with the consultation of all FANSA members.
The FANSA journey began in 2007. A long and broad based consultation process led by the FAN members in South Asia (Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Pakistan) with over 200 key actors from the water and sanitation sector, mostly small and medium sized civil society organisations, was conducted to explore the need for a South Asian regional water and sanitation network as an affiliation of FAN.
FAN South Asia (FANSA) was formally launched following a regional level meeting in Nepal in January 2008. Over 20 representatives, nominated at national and sub-national meetings came together to plan joint advocacy activities and take further steps towards building a strong and vibrant regional network.
